Trolltunga hike

Trolltunga (literally translation is: “the tongue of the Troll”) has during the later years gained international popularity as a bucket-list hike. And it is indeed an experience standing on the tip of this stone tongue.

If you’re staying at Høgelibu, it’s a 110 min drive to the starting point. You’ll pass by Skjervsfossen, cross the Hardanger bridge and then follow the eastern side of the Sørfjorden. It is a beautiful drive!

As there are loads of info regarding Trolltunga on the net, we’d like to provide you with our own inside tips:

  • Parking is expensive! There are three parking areas, P1, P2 and P3 - the latter one is the one closest to the Trolltunga itself, but it has very limited space (30 cars) is very expensive (NOK 600 parking fee + NOK 200 toll road fee), and you must book ahead. Thus P1 (NOK 300) and P2 (NOK 500) are your best options. In the season it is possible to catch a shuttle pus from P1 to the starting point. It will cost extra.

  • Please respect the fact that this hike is for intermediate/advanced hikers. The change of altitude from P1 is 2000 m and from P2 800 m. The weather can be changing. Start early, don’t be ashamed to turn around if you’re late (there are signs along the way that tells you to turn based on the time of the day). You must have good footwear (walking boots with ankle support) and clothing.

  • Don’t expect to be alone. In the high season, expect to spend sometimes hours in line on the top to get to actually walk out on the stone to have your photograph taken.
